AU bans Holi processions by hostlers
ALLAHABAD: Sending out a strong message to students that any sort of obscenity in the name of festival will not be tolerated, the Allahabad University has banned all Holi processions being taken out by hostlers.
Such processions are more of a nuisance as hostlers with bare torsos take to streets while dancing on vulgar Bhojpuri songs.
The hostlers have been taking out Holi processions for past many years. They first play Holi in the hostels and then come out on the roads with DJs accompanying them playing aloud Bhojpuri songs. The processions take a full round of road passing from the KPUC gate to women’s hostel where they dance for longer duration. This results in traffic jams in the area as commuters don’t say a word fearing a backlash from students.
In the previous years, the chief proctor had criticised such processions but at the same time showed his helplessness in stopping them.
Owing to the fear of rowdyism in the name of Holi, girls avoid moving out of the hostels in the evening. At times teachers escort girl students to the hostels.
But things are likely to improve with the AU cracking the whip on Holi processions. “I have stated that such indecent behaviour would not be tolerated and anyone who participates in such processions on the roads would have to face action,” said chief proctor Jata Shankar. The copy of the said notice has also been forwarded to the district magistrate and police officials, he added.

Bhojpuri songs drive audience into a frenzy
CHANDIGARH: It was Bhojpuri folk songs that set the tempo for the festival of colours during the ”Holi Milan” programme organised by the Purvanchal Welfare Association in Government College, Sector 46 on Sunday evening.Attired in their colourful dresses, the members of Purvanchal association did not miss a chance to enjoy Holi in advance. The pain of living away from the native place especially during Holi was reflected through a folk song performed by a group that made the gathering nostalgic.
Realising the sad mood, however, the singer changed the track and presented a foot tapping folk number to which the audience danced.
The performers had everything to entertain the crowd. They started their performance with a devotional song after which people applied colours on each other. Kids and women enjoyed the most.
A battery of bureaucrats, local politicians and families from across the region attended the programme in the open air theatre packed to its capacity. People who attended the programme said that though the festival was celebrated in a similar fashion, it were the bhojpuri songs that had brought them to the venue. They said that the live performance by bhojpuri singers in UT is rare.
”The basic idea to organize this programme was not just to bring all the families together but we want to ensure that the present generation is still connected the tradition and culture,” said Rajinder Singh, president of Purvanchal Association.

Kalpana strikes the nomination of Big Star IMA Awards
Report by Santanu Ganguly; Mumbai: Bhojpuri queen singer Kalpana song has been nominated in folk category of Big Star IMA Awards 2011. Song “Saiyyan Chhath Kaarat” from Chhath album “Aage bilaiya peche chhathi maiyya” is nominated.
Kalpana has sung many songs of chhath which are very famous all over. Kalpana has sung devotional song but with that many Bhojpuri filmy songs and Hindi song. Singer Kalpana has been admired not only in Bihar but all over India for her splendid singing.
The ‘Big Star IMA Awards 2011’ will give awards to renowned veterans and respected musicians from the Indian music fraternity. Each category widely imbibes music from different backgrounds such as Hindustani, Carnatic, Folk, Ghazal, Qawali, Jazz, Fusion and Film music.
The most astonishing thing is Kalpana is known as Bhojpuri singer whereas she is from Assam and sings in many languages of India. We hope Kalpana will fetch the Big Star IMA award. It is on 11th of this month at Goregaon sports club.
